New Stations, New Fares for South Florida Rail Travelers

Virgin Trains (Brightline) is making progress in the development of three new stations along its rail line, including PortMiami, Aventura, and Boca Raton.

Construction on the stations is expected to break ground by the end of this year, with train operations commencing in 2020. Each station is estimated to generate in excess of two million additional trips each year.

As a result of this development, multiple cities are now vying for transit oriented development. Proposals are being considered in North Miami Beach, Hallandale, Hollywood, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Palm Beach Gardens, according to Law.com.

But the news for train travelers isn’t all good: Tri-Rail, the region’s older commuter rail line, announced an increase in train fares just last week. Beginning on January 1, 2020, one-way and round-trip fares will increase by 60 cents, while monthly and regional passes will increase by $10. The new fares, voted on by the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority, will help address the system’s $11.4 million budget deficit. It is Tri-Rail’s first fare increase since 2009.
