The Fort Lauderdale Design Review Committee is currently considering a proposal for a large project that will replace the aging Searstown plaza and redefine the city’s skyline. The project, located on Federal Highway near the intersection of Sunrise Boulevard and Flagler Drive, goes by the name R.K. Center. The proposal features a group of five mixed-use towers with mid-century architectural design, including:
- Parcel 1: Three towers (30 stories, 30 stories, 15 stories) comprised of 819 residential units; 71,960 sq. ft. of retail/office; 4,000 sq. ft. of restaurant; 4,000 sq. ft. of food hall; 1,351 parking spaces
- Parcel 2: (17 stories) comprised of 192 hotel rooms; 22 residential units; 3,480 sq. ft. of restaurant; 1,290 sq. ft. of cafe; 288 parking spaces
- Parcel 3: (15 stories) comprised of 135 residential units; 4,718 sq. ft. of retail; 2,295 sq. ft. of restaurant; 10,312 square feet of art gallery; 230 parking spaces

Sears, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization in 2018, is reportedly shutting hundreds of stores nationwide. If the project moves forward, the store’s closure would effectively end the iconic brand’s presence in Fort Lauderdale, which started in the late 1930s.
