After months of backlash and contentious litigation, Walmart has sold the Midtown Miami site where it planned to develop a new store.
The 4.6 acre site, located at 3055 North Miami Avenue, sold to a neighboring Midtown developer for $26.4 million last week. The sale means that Walmart will no longer build its controversial 203,000-square-foot supercenter, which first received approvals back in 2013. The plan drew protests and ire from community activists and neighboring residents, who felt it would increase traffic and violate zoning ordinances.
The company says its decision to sell the site was based on other factors, including the Walmart’s growing e-commerce presence and the opening of other new stores in the Miami-Dade area, but opponents of the plan are considering it a victory. The new site developer is considering bringing an organic grocer and indoor and outdoor retailers to the area.
